Hysterical post. Having been present for many of your lessons with the little ones I can attest that teaching gives you no unfair advantage unless it's in the patience development department.

Thank you so much for turning me onto the Cliburn competition, it was really exciting and mesmerizing for this musician (bassist and former trumpet player) to watch. Talk about 10,000 hours of practice to get there looked more like 15,000 or 20,000 to me? To get to that level, do you eat or sleep? Wow.

Lou -- Oh, don't get me started on little students and bodily functions at the keyboard... this conversation could get really gross! But who knows, maybe you're right: We can't participate because of the germs.

You cracked me up. I watched the VanCliburn instead of doing so many things these past couple of weeks. I looked into the Amateur Van Cliburn before, and in fact know a couple of people who have competed(one who has won) Knowing what their occupations are, I realize that I would NEVER have as much time as they do to practice.

I think you should email Van with the truth about most teachers and that being unable to compete is just not fair.

You gave me a lot of pause for thought. Until I read your blog, I thought teachers were disqualified because of the number of times students have coughed or sneezed(or performed some other bodily function )on or in close proximity to their teacher or the piano over the years).

I figured it was The Germ Factor Rule. They need to protect the OTHER competitors from us (LOL)

How many times have I been just a tad too late reminding students about covering their mouths when coughing, or passing the hand sanitizer or tissue?
